The Environmental Health Directorate has warned that the above products (starch based snacks) must not be consumed due to the presence of an additive (food colouring E110) which is declared on the label but is not authorised for use in these products.
The products originate from Nepal, Mexico and Philippines.
The Directorate said that E110 is also known as Sunset Yellow FCF, Orange Yellow S, Food Yellow No. 5, or FD&C Yellow No. 6. E110 is an azo dye authorised for use as a food additive in the EU for certain food items such as non-heat processed meat, processed fish, mustard and sauces, flavoured drinks, etc but with applicable corresponding maximum levels in line with EU Regulation 1333 of 2008.
It explained that the use of this colour (and few others) also requires the additional warning “may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children” to appear on labels when used. However, its use is not allowed at all in this category of products i.e. ready-to-eat savouries and snacks (Potato-cereal-flour-or starch-based snacks). ?
