The Caravaggio Centre in St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta, has been inaugurated in the presence of Archbishop Charles Scicluna.

In his inauguration message, Archbishop Scicluna said the Caravaggio Centre’s significance extended far beyond aesthetic value.

“As well as showcasing the artist’s genius, it was also a testament to the lasting relevance of Caravaggio’s art which depicted both good and evil,” he said.The Archbishop said, “in The Beheading of St John the Baptist, we witness the tragedy that unfolds when arrogance and abuse of power victimise the innocent. Caravaggio’s masterpiece stands as a poignant reminder of the ongoing human tragedy. It mirrors current events in Ukraine, the Holy Land, Sudan, and numerous other countries.”

Archbishop Scicluna expressed his hope that this project would inspire visitors to seek positive change.
