A scientific survey in Maltese waters in order to raise awareness on fish and marine species found on the seabed, is currently being conducted by a trawler equipped for scientific research.

The University of Malta explained that Aquatic Resources Malta, which was launched last November by Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said, is carrying out the survey, and it will examine aquatic life stocks near the seabed with the aim of making fishing more sustainable, among other goals.

CFEO of Aquatic Resources Malta, Mr Frank Fabri, said the vessel will exit up to 90 miles outwards and the equipment will go down to 800 metres deep.

He also said the entity will be inviting 10 scientists from the University of Malta, MCAST and the sector to board the vessel and experience this episode.

Fisheries Department official, Mr Jurgen Mifsud, said that the waste collected throughout the study, such as microplastics, will also be documented.

The UM advised that this study forms part of a larger European study entitled Mediterranean International Trawl Survey.
