Tarmacking has started on the newly built road, Triq Gorg Pisani, this road is part of the Triq Marsalforn project, built to divert traffic to and from Marsalforn, the Ministry for Gozo and Planning said.

Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri visited the site, where work is currently underway on the first phase of the project which consists of the reconstruction of three roads and the opening of Triq Gorg Pisani. “Work on the new road is progressing with the construction of services, culverts and in a few days the bridge that crosses the valley will be built,” the Minister said.

He said that further work is underway with the aim of diverting traffic from the heart of Victoria as the Wara s-Sur junction will be fully reopened in a few days so that it will begin to take a significant part of the traffic going to or coming from Zebbug, Ghasri, Gharb and San Lawrenz.

Minister Camilleri continued to explain that the first phase of the work consisted of the construction of Triq Gorg Pisani and the reconstruction of Triq Patri Giancintu Camenzuli.

After the excavation was completed, where the historical heritage that was found was preserved, work began and was completed on the first part of Triq Gorg Pisani. This work consisted of cutting trenches to allow the passage of water, electricity and sewage services, and storm water culverts.

The Minister stated that “it is being projected that Triq Gorg Pisani will be opened for the first time next February and once it is opened, almost all traffic coming or going from Marsalforn will begin to pass through it.” He pointed out that, “With these two projects, traffic will be completely alleviated. In the heart of our villages and the city, we must give priority to people and not to vehicles. However, this can only happen if we build and provide the necessary alternatives.”

In recent months, water reservoirs have been found in both Triq Gorg Pisani and Triq Patri Giacintu Camenzuli that will be reused, as well as quarries and remains from the Roman era. “The work was being carried out with the utmost care under the supervision of the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage,” Camilleri said.

He concluded by saying that “the second phase of this project will consist of the reconstruction of Triq il-Kapuccini and Triq Marsalforn.”
