A new agreement has been signed to allow road cleaning to take place during off-peak hours, with the cleaning and Maintenance Division committing to carrying out the cleaning of arterial roads and distributors outside of congestion hours.

The signing between Transport Malta and the Cleaning and Maintenance Division was presided over by Minister for Transport, Chris Bonett together with the Parliamentary Secretary for Public Cleanliness, Glenn Bedingfield.

Under the new agreement cleaning will not be carried out between 06:00 and 09:00 and between 16:00 and 19:00 during the week, as well as between 09:00 and 13:00 on Saturdays. The main aim is to reduce the impact on traffic and improve the planning of these services.

Minister Bonett stated, “These agreements are not always easy to reach because they involve changes in the routine of various workers. However, the fact that this agreement is being signed just a few weeks after the measure was announced shows that where there is goodwill from all, an agreement can be reached for the common good.”

Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield explained that “through this agreement, we will not only ensure that public cleaning operations are carried out more efficiently, but we will also be directly contributing to reducing congestion on our roads as much as possible.”

The agreement was signed by Transport Malta Chief Executive Kurt Farrugia, and Ramon Deguara, Director General of the Cleaning and Maintenance Division.
