The designated swimming zone of the Blue Lagoon has been expanded by Team Blue Lagoon, extending the main central area while adding two nearby inlets, now exclusively reserved for swimmers as well.

In a statement on Saturday, the Malta Tourism Authority said that the original swimming zone has been increased by 12%. Two smaller beaches located to the left of the jetty have been newly designated as safe swimming zones.

It explained that previously, these inlets could be accessed by smaller boats and other watercraft, including jet skis. Now cordoned off, they are offering a safer setting for swimmers. Team Blue Lagoon will also strengthen the management of vessel traffic and berthing activities, as applicable for such high-traffic maritime zones.

The MTA said that these measures form part of a broader strategy to improve environmental sustainability at the Blue Lagoon, while protecting its delicate Natura 2000 ecosystems and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The swimming zone extension is one of several initiatives introduced since the 1st of May, as part of a two-year sustainability project, the MTA said. Other actions include improved waste management, additional sanitation facilities, increased enforcement and other long-term protection and rehabilitation measures.

Team Blue Lagoon also doubled cleaning and waste management resources this month “to ensure constant upkeep, with more frequent cleaning routines across the whole area,” said the MTA. “Workers are also giving special attention to removing any litter that ends up in the surrounding garigue areas.”

The Authority noted that environmental authorities and enforcement agencies are also increasing patrols to help prevent littering and other violations.
