A 73-year old man lost his life on Monday evening after getting into difficulties while swimming at Hondoq Bay, Gozo.

Police said that the incident happened at around 6.30pm.

Initial investigations revealed that the man found himself in difficulty while swimming. People who were nearby brought the man out of the sea.

The man was assisted by a medical team and taken to the Gozo General Hospital. Unfortunately, he was certified dead shortly afterwards.

Magistrate Dr Simone Grech was informed of the case and appointed a Magisterial Inquiry.

Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.
