BirdLife Malta has joined the many voices against the proposed planning law reform presented last week, saying that it “strongly condemns” the proposed planning law reforms published under Bills 143 and 144 (shown in Maltese first and in English below).

“These proposals would significantly weaken Malta’s environmental safeguards, diminish public participation, and severely restrict access to justice in planning decisions,” stated BirdLife Malta.

It warned that “by allowing discretionary interpretations of policy, limiting appeal rights and enabling the reinstatement of expired development permits, the reforms risk opening the door to unchecked development at the expense of Malta’s natural heritage.”

BirdLife Malta concluded by urging Parliament to “reject these regressive measures and instead strengthen the planning system to uphold transparency, rule of law and the protection of our environment for future generations.

“Join us in our struggle to save nature from the imminent threat of destruction.”
