The third edition of The Gozo Theatre Festival returns to Gozo next month, presented by Limestone Pictures and BETA Entertainment Entertainment Academy with the support of the Ministry for Gozo, and the Gozo Cultural Heritage Directorate.

Set against the charming backdrop of the Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria, the festival will take place on 9th and 11th of September, from 8pm onwards

The organisers explained that this cultural initiative aims to celebrate the power of performing arts by bringing together theatre-makers, directors, actors, and those who love the magic on stage in a vibrant open-air setting at the very heart of the island.

Audiences can look forward to a rich programme featuring 6 original productions, collaborations between local and international talents, and opportunities for audiences to engage with the arts in fresh, accessible ways.

By uniting creative institutions with cultural bodies, The Gozo Theatre Festival said that it seeks not only to entertain but also to foster dialogue, encourage new voices, and underline Gozo’s growing role as a hub for the performing arts.

This year the performances are a combination of dark-comedy, comedy, tragedy, mystery and crime drama.

This years chosen productions are:

Behind Closed Doors: a gripping, immersive whodunit where the audience holds the power to decide the final twist;.

Neither Here or There: a heartfelt coming-of-age play set around a handmade treehouse, where one boy navigates the bittersweet crossroads between childhood and growing up;

What if We Hadn’t Kissed?: a raw and unflinching theatrical journey that transforms a seemingly ordinary romance into a chilling portrait of control, violence, and survival;

Twinkie Poo Pants: a darkly tender one-woman play that weaves love, humour, and heartbreak into a fragmented portrait of two sisters grappling with the relentless grip of early-onset dementia; and The Kinnie Kids Three: Gozo Adventure: a riotous mystery-comedy bursting with aliens, oddballs, and sun-soaked Maltese mayhem; and

The Last Job: a razor-sharp dark comedy where mob slapstick spirals into a brutal meditation on loyalty, mortality, and the stories we tell.

This year, The Gozo Theatre Festival are also presenting two guest plays performed by the talented students of Beta Entertainment Theatre Academy. Each year, the Academy offers young performers the opportunity to showcase their skills at the festival, giving them invaluable stage experience and exposure.

9th September – King Lear for Kids by William Shakespeare, creatively adapted by Brendan P. Kelso

A fast-paced and engaging retelling of Shakespeare’s classic, designed to introduce younger audiences to the timeless tale of power, loyalty, and family conflict. Expect humour, drama, and a story brought to life in a way that’s accessible and exciting for all ages.

11th September – Jekyll & Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, creatively adapted by Brendan P. Kelso

This thrilling adaptation brings to the stage the dark and mysterious story of Dr. Jekyll and his sinister alter ego, Mr. Hyde. Blending suspense with theatrical flair, the play offers a captivating experience that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

The Gozo Theatre Festival said, “this is more than a programme; it is an invitation. An invitation to witness Gozo’s spirit expressed through the art of theatre, to discover parts of the gardens transforming in a performing area blooming with creativity, to experience how culture can root itself in a place and yet reach far beyond.”
