The first national patient safety strategy has been launched for public consultation by Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela.
It was explained that the main objective of the strategy is to list measures that will continue to strengthen the safety of the patient receiving care in Malta, while protecting the well-being of all healthcare workers in order to provide safe care.
The Minister noted that “this strategy aligns with the Malta 2050 Vision where patient safety is the foundation of our country’s healthcare system. A strategy that should lead to an environment where both patients and healthcare workers feel safe, respected and supported.”
He explained how the document being launched is the result of extensive preparatory work and a broad review of the progress made so far, led by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Health in consultation with various stakeholders together with experts from WHO Headquarters in Geneva and the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the Athens Office on Patient Safety and Quality.
“We are presenting a clear strategy with an emphasis on patient protection, on the training and development of workers, and on a culture where employees together with patients feel free to express their concerns without fear of repercussions. Over the past years, Malta has built a health system that we should be proud of where we have achieved successes in various sectors through innovation and even individual initiatives. This while our professionals are among the best trained,” Minister Abela stated.
“We understand that excellence is not a destination, but a journey. Therefore, committed to continuing to measure and monitor results, we will continue to listen to feedback, evaluate and act by taking the necessary decisions to address any shortcomings. Patient safety is not the sole responsibility of the administration or health professionals, but is a collective responsibility that we all share,” concluded Dr Abela.
