“I am certain that the people will place their trust in the Nationalist Party in the upcoming general election because this is the moment of youth, of families, of businesses, of the elderly, of the entire Maltese and Gozitan people,” said PN Leader Alex Borg. “This is our moment, the moment of all Maltese and Gozitans, the moment to give a new youth to our country through a once again youthful Nationalist Party.”

Alex Borg was speaking during the mass meeting held on Saturday evening which brought to an end the celebrations organised by the PN in Pjazza Tritoni to commemorate Malta’s Independence.

In front of a large crowd gathered for his first speech at a mass activity, Alex Borg said that if it were not for two great statesmen who had a dream and fulfilled it, our country today would not be what it is – “Gorg Borg Olivier who dreamed of giving us an Independent Malta and Eddie Fenech Adami who dreamed of giving us a European Malta.”

Alex Borg thanked every Leader that the PN has had since Independence, among them his predecessor Bernard Grech as well as Lawrence Gonzi, Simon Busuttil and Adrian Delia. Each one of them achieved different milestones and brought the Nationalist Party to where it is today, he said.

The PN Leader said that during the campaign of the past weeks he had promised that he would be entering this role not to reduce the gap with the Labour Party but to win the upcoming election. He said that the PN is the party of the future not because it is its turn to win but because the people are longing for a change in direction and for youthful leadership.

Alex Borg said that he wants to once again give hope to those who have lost faith in politics through a party that looks after their future, that gives them a country in which they can live comfortably and which gives them a better quality of life.

He said that whenever the PN united the nation, it won the election. Adding that “this is the moment of the entire Maltese and Gozitan people.”

The Leader of the PN said that he is listening and will continue to listen to everyone, “because it is only in this way that people’s politics is truly shaped.”

Alex Borg said that he wants to attract to the PN those who never agreed with the Nationalist Party through the politics of persuasion, those who distanced themselves from the party, and those who are not yet convinced.

He said that his only enemies are those who do not love Malta and Gozo and those who harm our country.

Alex Borg said that the recent campaign united the party and the crowd present this evening in Pjazza Tritoni continues to give great hope that this party is once again becoming the natural home of the Maltese and Gozitans.

He said that this campaign showed how the PN is capable of emerging from moments of challenge stronger than before, and he thanked Adrian Delia and those who ran his campaign. Alex Borg said that he is certain that Adrian Delia will continue to be a pillar in the Nationalist Party.

The Leader of the PN said that he will lead as he promised during his oath – “for the benefit of the white and red and not for the blue or the red – for all Maltese and Gozitans, not for the chosen few, because the PN is the party of the nation.”

He said that no one can forget the PN’s glorious past, but now is the moment to look ahead so that together we build a more beautiful Malta and Gozo for everyone.

Borg said that he does not intend to oppose everything without reason, but he will not stop opposing the Government when it is failing the people.

Alex Borg said that in the coming weeks the PN will publish proposals to ease traffic, proposals so that more people can buy their own home, proposals for general health and mental health, measures to help businesses that offer quality jobs, industries that protect the environment, and others that place Gozo as a priority.

The Leader of the Nationalist Party said that a few days ago he had spoken about the need to revise local plans so that we have more sustainable and sensible planning, and mentioned a skyline policy, including for Gozo – something which to this day the Government has not done. “This threw Government Ministers into a frenzy and they lashed out at him while pretending that after years of doing nothing they have now suddenly remembered the environment,” he said.

Alex Borg said that now that the Government “seems to have woken up and remembered the environment, it must immediately pass through Parliament the motion to have the environment protected in the Constitution and must also immediately scrap the supposed planning reform it presented a few weeks ago and re-draft a reform that truly protects the environment and our country.”

Borg was referring to an interview on Saturday with WhosWho, when he said that towers could be built in Gozo and remarked that “you can’t generalise. You can’t say Gozo in general. You have areas where there could be, based on the skyline policy.”

However, Gozo and Planning Minister Clint Camilleri, writing on Facebook, responded by saying, “after only two weeks in office, the PN Leader is saying that under him, towers will start being built in Gozo. Honestly, I could not believe it when I was told about this statement.”

Camilleri insisted that, “Gozitans know that under this Government it is completely forbidden to have a permit for a tower in Gozo – all of Gozo, without exception.”

“Labour would continue to resist pressure for high-rise projects,” stated Clint Camilleri. “We believe in the facts of Gozo as an island of villages, and we will continue to work to protect its unique characteristics.”

Before Alex Borg made his speech, those present were also addressed by the Deputy Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Perici Calascione and the Secretary General Charles Bonello.
