Xaghra Local Council is keeping with its tradition and is organising another edition of the village’s Carnival between Friday, the 12th and Sunday, the 14th of February 2010. This carnival’s main aim is to entertain all the members of the family and has three themes: the folkloric aspect of Carnival, Carnival festivities for children and the family Carnival.

The folkloristic Carnival activity takes place on Friday, the 12th of February. From 7pm onwards, in Victory Square, a varied programme is presented, including the participation of several Gozitan folk groups namely Ta’ Sinat Folk Group (Sannat), Ta’ Ciangura Folk Group (San Lawrenz), Menhir Folk Group (Qala) and Xag]ra Folk Group. The traditional Kukkanja and Kumittiva will be featured during this programme. The Kumittiva will also be an attraction in this programme. Il-Kumittiva is synonymous with our village. This traditional Gozitan Carnival dance dates back to 1890. The village of Xaghra was instrumental in keeping this carnival dance alive and the Local Council worked hard to revive this tradition especially when it started organising the village’s carnival. The compères for this event will be Mr. Anthony Grech and Mrs. Orietta Gatt.

The children’s Carnival takes place on Saturday, the 13th of February from 7.30pm onwards in the Nazzarenu Square. The programme includes dances from schoolchildren and several competitions for the best carnival costumes for different age groups. Other competitions which draw a lot of interest include those for the best carnival masquerade, best decorated agricultural tractor and the best spontaneous Carnival costume. The compères for this event will be Mr. Joe Louis Sciberras and Ms. Amanda Sultana.

The main and last spectacular Carnival programme in Xaghra will be held on Sunday, the 14th of February 2010 from 10.00am onwards. The programme starts in front of Ta’ Kola Windmill with the traditional Kumittiva dance and continues with festive band marches by the Victory Philharmonic Society of Xaghra from the club’s premises in Maria Bambina Street passing through 8th September Avenue and ending in Victory Square. The programme begins at 11.30am in Victory Square and includes Carnival dances by several Gozitan dance companies and Carnival floats. Renato and Roderick Azzopardi will be the presenters. The traditional prinjolata will also be given for free to the general public.

The Xaghra Local Council is inviting everyone to come and enjoy the Carnival activities in a friendly atmosphere, and say that entertainment is guaranteed for all the family.
