Last week marked a significant milestone for the Malta Police K9 Unit, as the Unit held its first official certification process for its Canine Teams.

Malta Police explained that the certification was conducted by an external qualified certifier representing the ASA Agency – an organisation that certifies canine teams for various law enforcement bodies, including the U.S. Military, the British Army Class 1 and several agencies across Europe and the United States.The programme involved a comprehensive assessment across multiple search scenarios, including open areas, buildings, luggage and vehicles – testing both blank areas and positive finds to fully evaluate the teams’ operational capabilities.

The Police said that according to international standards, canine teams are required to demonstrate competence in three search scenarios.

“However, our K9 teams were tested in four, successfully completing all – a testament to their exceptional skill, discipline and readiness to operate beyond minimum international requirements,” said the Police. “Congratulations to all involved for this accomplishment.”
