GUG welcomes the President’s vision for Gozo’s youthThe Gozo University Group (GUG) said that it welcomes and fully supports the remarks made by President Myriam Spiteri Debono during her Jum Ghawdex address, particularly her focus on the importance of creating more opportunities for young people in Gozo.

In a statement, GUG said that it “strongly agrees with the President’s observation that many young Gozitans face daily challenges due to the lack of sufficient employment opportunities on the island.”

It noted that the statistic that one in five Gozitans must commute to Malta for work reflects a long-standing reality that continues to impact students and graduates alike.

The President’s call for increased local job creation, especially through investment in innovation and technology, echoes GUG’s consistent advocacy for a more sustainable and future-oriented Gozo, stated the Group.

The Group said that it also shares the President’s vision for a Gozo that embraces progress without compromising its identity and natural heritage.

It stressed that, “young people are the key to achieving this balance. By fostering sectors such as the digital economy, research, and sustainable development, Gozo can offer its youth a genuine chance to build their careers and families locally.”

GUG particularly welcomes the President’s reference to the potential of the Gozo Innovation Hub as a center for business and technology. GUG pointed out that “turning this vision into reality would create meaningful opportunities for graduates from the University of Malta and MCAST who wish to contribute their skills to the island’s economy.”

The Group went on to say that “the President’s recognition of the growing role of youth and civil society in shaping Gozo’s future also aligns with GUG’s mission.”

“As the leading voice for Gozitan students, GUG remains committed to collaborating with national and regional authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to ensure that young people are part of the decision-making process that defines Gozo’s path forward,” it said.

The Gozo University Group concluded by expressing its gratitude to the President for “giving prominence to issues that directly affect Gozo’s young generation and reaffirms its dedication to working towards a vibrant, sustainable, and opportunity-rich Gozo, where the youth can truly belong, thrive, and succeed.”
