Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri, extended his congratulations to author Joseph Scicluna, who after the publication Chambray, has now launched another interesting book entitled Defiant: The Knights at War 1522-1535.

In this book, Scicluna gives a detailed look at the military campaigns, the political context and the human experience under the rule of the Knights, in that particular era.

The description explained that this book follows the Order of St John through one of the most turbulent interludes in its history. Stripped of its stronghold, the Order wrestled with questions of identity, legitimacy, and purpose until it secured a tentative foothold in Malta and reemerged as a force in the western Mediterranean.

Rather than being confined to a simple recounting of events, the narrative seeks to situate them within the broader geopolitical and ideological currents of the sixteenth century.

While the drama of sieges, voyages, and campaigns is vividly retold, equal attention is devoted to the human dimension – stories of suffering and heroism, alongside the atrocities committed by both sides.

The Minister, speaking during the launch which took place in Ghajnsielem, said that this it “another interesting book that anyone who loves the history related to the Knights, should have in their library.”
