Leader of the Nationalist Party Alex Borg, in his closing address at the National Convention held at the Excelsior Hotel under the theme Malta ‘l Quddiem, pledged that within the first 100 days of a Nationalist Government, work will begin on a new mass transport project that will improve people’s lives.

“We want the Malta we know. A Malta where you live well. The politics that we saw taking shape throughout this Convention must stay with us in its implementation,”stated Borg. “We must keep listening in order to deliver policy from the people for the people. This is the moment to take Malta forward – Malta ‘l Quddiem.”

This Convention organised by the PN brought together people from every corner of Malta and Gozo who, together with social partners, constituted bodies, organisations and NGOs, as well as a number of experts, over these two days discussed the challenges facing the country.

Discussions also revolved around how to respond to them, and the solutions that the PN wants to find so that, after translating these ideas into proposals, it will be in a position to build its political vision for the future and deliver an improved quality of life for the Maltese and Gozitan people.

In his address on Sunday morning, the Leader of the PN said that one of the greatest challenges people are facing today is how to maintain balance. “Some are feeling this pressure through the rising cost of living, rent, or increasing medicine prices, while others feel it through the lack of time with their loved ones. He said that people are thirsty for the peace of mind that comes with a better tomorrow.”

Alex Borg stressed that that he “wants a Malta where you live well, a Malta that makes you proud to live in and that encourages you to thrive. Alex Borg said that this Convention was proof of how this can be achieved.”

He spoke about how balanced communities mean more balanced lives and said it is regrettable that the pulse of the community was weakened when local councils were stripped of much of their power.

He spoke about the challenges in housing and said that whereas in the past people were proud to become homeowners, today this has become a source of distress for many.

Alex Borg also spoke about the importance of diversifying education so that everyone finds their place in the world of work.

The Leader of the PN also spoke about the unique character of Gozitan villages and the fact that this is not guaranteed forever. “That is why we must plan in the long term and provide guarantees that we will not lose the identity of this gem, and why there must be greater emphasis on quality rather than volume.”

On young people, he said that he does not want them to give up on opening their own businesses and wants to see young people harness their ambitions to reach the highest goals.

Alex Borg then spoke about connectivity in across the country and said that it has “completely collapsed, not only between the two islands.”

He asked whether Malta is prepared for tomorrow’s traffic challenges and whether it is equipped for the transport of the future. The PN Leader also mentioned how “traffic costs us €900 million a year” and said that “with €900 million 40 new schools could be built, another hospital the size of Mater Dei could be constructed, every residence in Malta could be given a free renewable energy source, and 15,000 couples could become homeowners without difficulty.”

The Leader of the PN stressed that we cannot remain stuck in endless debates that do not translate into solutions. Alex Borg said that a new government led by him will immediately begin work on a new and modern mass transport service. “A national project that makes us proud and that serves all Maltese and Gozitans.” This, said Alex Borg, “will be delivered within five years and not in another 20 years.” He insisted that the “Maltese people want choices, not punishments.”

Alex Borg said that in this way we will also begin to restore balance, through the Malta we know, through prosperity that reaches everyone, and through a government that takes care of you.

He concluded his speech with a reflection on his decision to enter politics. Alex Borg said that while many young people have distanced themselves from politics, he felt the need to answer the call to serve. He said that he wants to keep listening before judging, and to understand the realities people are living.

He made an open invitation: “Stay with us. Speak to us. Keep giving us your advice. Hold us accountable.” He said that Malta’s future does not belong to one party or another, but to all Maltese and Gozitans.

The Leader of the Nationalist Party opened his speech by paying tribute to Sandro Grech, the father of two children who passed away in recent hours, and pledged his full support to his family.
