More than 100 employees, working with Magro Brothers Group, successfully completed a total of 44 courses organised by the Employment and Training Corporation, ETC, Gozo. The courses that included amongst others, Time Management, Customer Care, Basic Skills and Advanced IT, Food Handling and Health and Safety, were held at the Wiston Camilleri Gozo Centre for Art and Crafts, Ghajnsielem, between March and May and between October and November of last year.

This was one of the initiatives taken by the government over the last year, to counter the negative impact of the economic crisis experienced in the world economy. Through this initiative the time has been used so that the workers undertake exercises to improve or increase their competence.

During the ceremony of the presentation of certificates to those who attended these courses, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono congratulated all the participants, who had recognised the opportunity offered by the government through the ETC, as part of its commitment to protect jobs and to improve the skills of workers. She praised the cooperation of the Magro Brothers Company, while stressing that the employee is the best resource of any enterprise. She added that this is particularly relevant to the Maltese Islands, that their main resource is its own human resource. During this ceremony Mr John Magro, Managing Director of Magro Group and Mr Marcel Bonnici, the manager of the ETC Gozo also gave a speech.

Last year, nearly 900 people attended courses conducted in collaboration between the ETC and Wiston Camilleri Gozo Centre for Art and Crafts, over 35,000 hours of practical training in a number of trades. Other initiatives taken together with the ETC also included those for people who were registering for work.

Other schemes of the ETC Gozo, led to more employment being created, through the Gozo Employment Aid Scheme, which paid €1.4 million to 94 companies or enterprises that operated between them 264 people. Furthermore, a new scheme, for Gozitan businesses which offered employment to 141 workers will also be entitled to related assistance.
