36th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to the Maltese Islands

As part of the commemoration of the 36th anniversary from the first pontiff visit to Malta and Gozo, the JP2 Cultural Foundation said it is urging all communities and locations that hosted in 1990 His Holiness Pope John Paul II to commemorate in a way or another this historical event so it will never be forgotten.

The localities visited by the Pope were in Gozo: Gharb and Victoria and in Malta: Valletta, Attard, Mellieha, Birgu, San Giljan, Ta’ Qali, Rabat, Mdina, Floriana and Luqa.

This year the commemoration dates are Monday 25th, Tuesday 26th and Wednesday, the 27th of May.

The JP2 Cultural Foundation said that it will officially commemorate this event by holding a Eucharistic Celebration at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Ghajnsielem, on Tuesday, the 26th of May, at 7pm. by Bishop Emeritus George Bugeja, and will be animated by local soprano Roberta Hili accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Jennifer Grech.

This May event is part of the JP2 Memorial Festival 2026.

      In Gozo he was the only Pope who visited the Cathedral at the Citadella, and the Parish Priest is commorating this event by a Mass at the Cathedral. more deatels on the web page I guess.
