Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg, who was interviewed on NET TV on Sunday, spoke about seeking the PN’s trust once again to continue the renewal process that began eight months ago and about amendments he will be proposing to the Statute to create two Deputy Leader posts.

He said that although the PN did not achieve the electoral result it had hoped for, the latest election sent a clear signal that more and more Maltese and Gozitan people are looking for a credible alternative to the present Government.

In an interview with Thomas De Martino, PN Leader Alex Borg said that over the past eight months, the Nationalist Party had brought about an important change in the way it reached out to people, ”by leading a positive campaign built on concrete proposals aimed at improving the quality of life of Maltese and Gozitan families.”

He emphasised that the PN will continue to fulfil its role as an ”effective, serious and responsible Opposition in Parliament, while continuing to move closer to people and offer new hope for our country.”

Alex Borg announced that he will once again be seeking the trust of the Nationalist Party to continue the renewal process that began eight months ago. He said that his priority is to continue strengthening the PN through more modern structures, greater participation and the involvement of more new people.

In this context, he explained that the Nationalist Party will be proposing amendments to the Statute to create two Deputy Leader posts – one responsible for party affairs and the other for parliamentary work.

The PN Leader recalled that the first step he took following the electoral result was to launch an open consultation process through feedback forms and a call for volunteers. He said that the Party wants to be more open, more inclusive, better organised and closer to people.

On the electoral result, Alex Borg emphasised that the PN ”increased its vote by more than 13,000 when compared with the previous election, registered an increase in support in every electoral district, won six districts and regained a majority of votes in Gozo.”

“This is a clear sign that more and more people believe in our project. However, we are conscious that we still have a great deal of work to do to earn the trust of the majority of the Maltese and Gozitan people,” Alex Borg said.

With regard to the Shadow Cabinet, Alex Borg said that he will wait for the casual election process to be concluded before making the necessary appointments. He expressed great confidence in the quality of the Nationalist Party’s Parliamentary Group and said he is convinced that this team will offer an effective and credible Opposition.

The PN Leader also referred to more than 1,150 people who shared their experiences and views with the Party through an online application.

Alex Borg concluded by saying that the PN is ready to learn from the experience of the general election so that it can continue building a stronger alternative for the future.

“This election did not give us the result we wanted. But it gave us direction. It gave us a lesson. It gave us a clear sign that the people are looking for a credible alternative. I believe in the future of the Partit Nazzjonalista, I believe in the future of Malta, and I believe that if we remain humble, united and determined, we will get there. The election has passed, but our mission towards a better Malta and Gozo has only just begun.”

At the beginning of the interview, the PN Leader paid tribute to the memory of PN candidate Josephine Xuereb, who passed away in recent hours. Josephine contested the 2022 general election on behalf of the PN on the seventh and thirteenth districts, and had also been approved as a PN candidate for the general election that has just passed, although she did not contest it due to her health.

In 2019, she also contested the local council election in Zebbug on behalf of the PN. PN Leader Alex Borg, on behalf of the Nationalist Party, conveyed his condolences to her family.
