The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) Board have said that they approved the re-design of the controversial interpretation centre and ancillary facilities in Dwejra, Gozo with the prime purpose of significantly reducing the visual impact of this development. The re-design includes the part removal of existing frame structure and the relocation of the kitchen facilities to the underground level freeing the upper level from any imposing structures to accommodate an open-air catering facility.

The original Dwejra interpretation centre and its ancillary facilities had been approved by the Development Control Commission in March 2007 but works had been stopped in 2008 following discussions between the applicant and the Dwejra Management Committee on a possible solution to further mitigate the visual impact of the development on the surrounding environment.

The Authority said that the redesign of these facilities is in line with the approved Action Plan for the Qawra/Dwejra Area, on the western coast of the island of Gozo. This Plan calls for the adoption of a comprehensive approach for the conservation and preservation of resources and features of scientific, cultural and aesthetic interest in the area.

The Qui-si-Sana garden, which is situated along the Tigne Promenade, is to be extended and upgraded following the MEPA Board’s approval of works. The re-development of this public recreational space will include a number of play areas, a gazebo, hard and soft landscaping works, public facilities and a network of underground reservoirs.

The recreational space will be developed below street level ensuring that the shading structures and the sanitary facilities will not obstruct the open seaview from the promenade level, the Authority concluded.

This development is a disgrace and the plans should never even have been allowed to leave the architect’s drawing board, let alone be sanctioned/condoned by MEPA. Shame on you MEPA, Heritage Malta and all the other unsavoury people involved.

The ‘inland sea’ could be covered in a nice big plastic dome and made into an indoor heated swimming pool for the winter months…… with the entrance to the sea blocked off by a nice big sluice gate – great idea, right?

These people think that they know everything but all they know is to disturb the beautiful place of Dwejra, I was there 2 years ago and I seen the ugly building and I was talking to a local Taxi driver and he said to me, that it doesn’t matter what the local people say, he said Money talks and Money walks.

The reason I am writing this is because it is happening on the other side of Gozo in the beautiful Bay of HONDOQ IR-RUMMIEN and may I say something it is better that these places like Dwejra and Hondoq ir-Rummien stay as National Parks so everyone can enjoy these places. I will be there again this Summer.

Well people let me tell you this, I went to Gozo 5 years in a row (as a tourist), and even planned to buy a house, but seeing the negative development of things I decided to take my money elsewhere.

Who’s in good position doesn’t care about nothing else of his pocket, and who’s in a bad possition got more important things to thing about, so what I am saying is that no one gives a damn, because no one appreciates this island, hope things go worse so they learn one day

Talk about Dwejra I bought 2 of the cheapest and smallest ice creams from the ice cream van and charged me 5 euros, and no reciet I guess she realised me and my partner were tourists.
It’s disgusting that they charge what they want. Now I know why they don’t have prices written anywhere
I will not be promoting Malta because it seems like the law is turning a blind eye as well
