The Police have said that more than 16,000 vehicles were stopped in around 720 road checks held across Malta and Gozo between June and September.
The checks were carried out by various Police units at different times of the day and night, as part of a sustained effort to improve road safety and curb dangerous driving and identify non?compliant drivers.
The Police said that while the vast majority of motorists were found to be following traffic rules, its officers issued around 880 summonses and filed 104 charges.
98 tests were conducted on drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Sixteen individuals tested positive for alcohol.
Among the common offences found during the road checks, were driving without a licence or insurance, failing to wear a seatbelt, using a mobile phone while driving and other breaches of traffic regulations.
The Police said road checks will continue in the coming days and months, and urged motorists to respect traffic laws and drive responsibly for their own safety and that of other road users.
