About 200 people will be in Gozo between the 22nd and 23rd of April for the annual conference of ECAD (European Cities Against Drugs). The conference has been organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Consultation, together with the Local Council of Pembroke.

When addressing a press conference in San Lawrenz, Gozo, Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said that apart from many European cities participating who are affiliated with the ECAD organisation, including the Norwegian cities as well as those from Estonia, Bulgaria and Russia. Delegations will also be coming a great distance, such as Nepal.

ECAD has 265 cities from 30 different countries affiliated with it. The purpose of the organisation is working to reduce the use and abuse of drugs.

For this conference representatives were invited from the 68 Local Council in Malta and Gozo, who are also being encouraged to join in ECAD, as did 11 localities in Malta last year. Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said went on to say that the island of Gozo island is ideal for conferences of this kind. Besides giving a unique background, conferences in Gozo also mean an injection of bookings in the island’s hotels.

In ECAD conference will discuss initiatives and programmes that can be used to strengthen cooperation in fighting drugs and its abuse. Among the speakers will be members of the organisations of Sedqa, Oasi, Caritas, Narcotic Anonymous and the police. The chosen theme for the conference is “Empowering our Citizens to Live Healthier Lifestyles.”

Apart from discussions at the conference, the guests will have the opportunity to admire the beauty of the island of Gozo so that they may take back a wonderful memory of the island in spring.
