Victor Agius has put on show his latest sculptures in a personal exhibition which he entitled ‘La Materia’; a title enthused from the artist’s viewpoint that the simplest natural aspects can instigate the creation of a work of art. The last time Agius exhibited sculptures was in November 2008 when he held a sizeable show called ‘Volumes’ at the Ministry for Gozo.

In these new works of art one can sense the inspiration the artist gets from his natural surroundings, his allusions to rocky forms and his idea that ‘matter is the essence; without it there would be no form and no detail’.At first glance the sculptures seem purely abstracted rocky structures but as the viewer zooms out figurative references catch the eye. One must experience these works bodily since words and photos fail to truthfully describe and assimilate them.

Agius has studied under artist Harry Alden and ceramist George Muscat, got a degree in art from the University of Malta and furthered his studies at the MCAST and in Perugia, Italy. Amongst his international solo exhibitions, Agius exhibited his works in Florence and Lago Maggiore, Italy.

His art pieces are found worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo. Lately he participated in a number of international collective shows including the ‘Art in Mind show at the Bricklane Gallery in London, the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Florence and currently he is exhibiting at the Long Room Gallery, New College, Oxford University in Britain.

‘La Materia’ will be held at the art..e Gallery, Library Street, Victoria, Gozo throughout May 2010 and opening hours are from Monday to Sunday from 09.30 to 12.15 and on Fridays from 17.00 till 19.00.
