The Gozo Horse Racing Association has today officially launched the Gozo Equine Cup, a new competition for horse races taking place on the Gozo race track, Ta ‘Xhajma. The meeting to be held on Sunday consists of four final classes A1, A, B and C / D and other races of trotting and pony classes. The heats held last Sunday attracted a good sized crowd.

The Gozo Equine Cup is made with the full collaboration of the Secretariat of State for Consumer, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Consultation and the intention is that this becomes an annual event in the Gozo sporting calendar.

During the launch of this competition, Parliamentary Secretary, Chris Said, commented that equine sport is very popular in Gozo and the government must help the sport continue to strengthen and grow. The Parliamentary Secretary said that the higher level in this sport will encourage more people and it is why the Gozo Equine Cup brings the best horses in Malta together with those in Gozo.

Chris Said went on to say that good facilities already exist in Gozo, but improvements in the level of competition and increased popularity can serve as an incentive to further strengthen the structure and organisation of this sporting discipline.

He said that the Gozo Equine Cup is another initiative to strengthen internal tourism in Gozo during the months considered to be quiet in tourism. He mentioned other activities, such as ones that are being organised by Gozitan Local Councils in the winter months and the Notte Gozitana in Victoria, which also serve the same purpose.

Chris Said thanked the Gozo Horse Racing Association for its work and urged the enthusiasts of the sport to continue to work to raise the level of this past time in the Island of Gozo.
