MEPA have said that two calls for tenders, which form part of the EU funded project ‘Developing National Environmental Monitoring Infrastructure and Capacity,’ have just been published on the Official Journal of the EU, requesting the provision of services related to environmental monitoring to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA).

They said that the aim of this project is to radically improve the national environmental monitoring capacity in five environmental themes – air, water, radiation, noise and soil. It will result in the procurement of environmental monitoring equipment, information management systems, delivery of environmental baseline surveys, training of staff, and the development and enhancement of the national monitoring programmes in these five environmental themes.

The first call for tenders is related to the engagement of a full time project coordinator to manage the day-to-day implementation and to ensure the timely delivery of project results, within the allocated budget.

The second call for tenders is divided into three part. Through this service contract, consultants will deliver a national environmental monitoring strategy, terrestrial 3D surveys, water bathymetric surveys up to 1 nautical mile from the baseline coast, and baseline surveys for air, water and radiation.

These calls for tenders will soon be followed by another two. One call will cater for the supply of information resources systems and air monitoring equipment, while the other will design and implement a Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS), including the development of a web-based Geographical Information Systems (GIS) interface.

All four tenders follow an International Open Tender procedure, and are part-financed by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund 2007-2013 – Investing in Your Future.
