During the academic year 2008-2009, participation in dance schools totalled 3,593 students.

Of the 3,593 students attending the 32 dance schools surveyed, 1,430 sat for foreign examinations. The dance types preferred by females were classical ballet, modern and jazz dance, as during the previous year. Males showed a preference for Latin American, ballroom, jazz and modern dance, as well as other types of dance such as salsa.

Of the students participating in the different dance classes, 89 per cent were females and 40 per cent were attending classic ballet classes. During the year under review, 34 per cent attending classes were under the age of 10 while 13 per cent were 25 and over.

The majority of the staff employed with dance schools were on a part-time basis (78 per cent). The majority of those employed on a full-time basis were directors. The largest number of employees, 51, were dance teachers who were on a part-time basis. Directors could also be fulfilling the role of dance teachers.

The recurrent expenditure for dance schools reached €705,068 in 2009. A 54-per-cent proportion of expenditure covered labour costs. In 2009, dance schools registered an income of €898,899. During the year under review, 82 per cent of this income was attributed to tuition fees, while dance shows accounted for 15 per cent.
