One of the initiatives of the eco-Gozo vision, is the cleaning up the of the valley floors in Gozo, including the provision of dams for the collection of rainwater.

During recent months, works were carried out in Wied ta’ Zejta, near Victoria. During the first phase of these works, around 18,000 tons of waste was cleared from the area, some of which had been the result of dumping.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, visited the works site this morning with the Parliamentary Assistant within the Ministry for Gozo, Frederick Azzopardi, along with other Ministry officials in the Ministry.

The Minister said that similar work will now be getting underway in the valley between Marsalforn and Victoria, the rubble walls in the valleys are also being repaired.

The purpose of these works is to enable more rainwater to be collected and used, rather than being wasted by flowing away into the sea. Farmers will benefit from this initiative, as it will mean less ground water having to be extracted, which will have a positive effect on the water table, the Minister said.

This project is one of eighty proposed plans of action for the eco-Gozo vision for the period of 2010-2012.
