Mayor Francis Cauchi recently represented the Ghajnsielem Local Council at the ‘IMED Initiative’ conference in the Regione Sicilia Headquarters, Palermo.
The IMED Initiative aims to be a fully fledged EU project on the activation of a cooperative link between the minor islands of the Mediterranean, as part of Italia-Malta 2007-2013 Project. More than 60 representatives, including economic operators and various international and regional press institutions were present during the conference.
As the island of Comino forms part of the village of Ghajnsielem, discussions will be taking place for a cultural twinning agreement between Ghajnsielem and the island of Pantelleria situated in the North West between Malta and the Tunisian coast. It is possible that the Ghajnsielem Local Council may be entitled up to €50,000 in grants for this cooperation.
The conference was chaired by Dott. Conte, representing both the Brussels Regional Department and the Office for Extra Regional Affairs within the Regione Sicilia. The conference was coordinated by Dott.ssa Di Liberto, Director of Servizio II – Coordinamento Attivita’ Regionali Isole Minori (Regione Sicilia).
Dr Samuel Azzopardi, President of the Gozo Region and Mayor of Victoria (project partner) was absent due to other official engagements.
