20 years have passed since Malta ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This year Malta has also ratified the Optional Protocol to the CRC on the Sale of Children, child prostitution and child pornography as well as the Convention on the Protection of minors from sexual exploitation and pornography of the Council of Europe.

The Office of the Commissioner for Children organised an event called ‘Niccelebraw’ Flimkien at the Verdala Castle yesterday, Sunday 14th November in order to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Malta’s Ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Various government departments and agencies offering services to children in the health, education, environment, social protection, sports and cultural sectors as well as the Kunsill Nazzjonali taz-Zaghzagh and the Kumissjoni Nazzjonali Persuni b’Dizabilta’ set up information stands in order to inform the public of the different services that are available for children and young people.

The families that visited Niccelebraw Flimkien, also visited the Verdala Palace and its grounds. A special child friendly information brochure about the Verdala Palace was disseminated by this Office. Other side events included: a Police dog show and Mounted police; a first aid Demonstration by Youth members of the St. John Ambulance; the Civil Protection Department showed the children how a fire engine operates; an interactive Puppet Show by the Drama Unit; a demonstration by the Malta Girl Guides; a separate Choir performance by Floriana Primary School and Agius de Soldanis Secondary School. The day was animated by In Guardia who prepared a special re-enactment for the occasion.

Il-Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport and the Ghaqda Hbieb tal-Presepju facilitated workshops and activities throughout the whole day. Students from MCAST also offered their help throughout the day.

The Children who attended this important event were given a token by the Office of the Commissioner for children and a choice of yoghurt/fruit/water offered by our sponsors. The Children were also visited by H.E. Dr. George Abela, President of Malta; Hon. George Pullicino, Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs and the Hon. Clyde Puli, Parliamentary secretary for Youth and Sport.

Everyone who participated in this event did so on a voluntary basis.
