The Ministry for Gozo has said that the works that are being carried out on rebuilding the road from Fontana down to Xlendi, are proceeding well, and over the past week the first layer of tarmac has been laid.

The re-building of this road forms part of a larger project that also incorporates the construction of the road to Ta’ Pinu. This project is estimated to be worth an investment of € 9.5 million, and will consist of the re-construction of 2.5 kilometers of road by virtue of co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund under the Programme ‘Cohesion Policy of the European Union for the period 2007 to 2013. It aims to improve the quality of the roads, as well as the accessibility to these two major tourist attractions in Gozo, for the benefit of both residents and tourists visiting the island of Gozo, the Ministry said.

The Ministry went on to say that the works to date include the excavation and construction of a new road, construction of rubble walls, new installations of sewer services, as well as other work associated with the stormwater management because of the high volume of water that flows when it rains heavily. The works will also include the strengthenig the electricity infrastructure and will therefore improve the service to residences and other establishments in Xlendi.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, explained how the Ministry has taken, and continues to take, all the necessary measures to facilitate alternative routes for the Xlendi road as well as the one to Ta’ Pinu, whilst also trying to keep the inconvenience to residents at a minimum.
