Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party has expressed its support of the private members bill presented by Evarist Bartolo for a gender identity act.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “As a Green Party, AD has always been consistent in supporting LGBT rights, and the rights of transgendered people are no exception. We augur that the bill will be discussed in a serious manner in parliament, free from prejudice and bigotry. LGBT activists can rest assured on AD’s support, where to date, we are the only party in Malta with clear policies on LGBT rights, with full support of the Green group in the European Parliament, which is the most progressive group on LGBT issues.”

Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, AD spokesperson for civil rights, added, “‘This bill is a challenge for Maltese parliament since most MPs promote conservative values. AD appeals to MPs be empathic towards the fundamental rights of such persons. Even if LGBT rights conflict with certain traditions and religious values, this does not mean that they should be forsaken.”
