In the fourth quarter of 2010, commuters between Malta and Gozo increased by 7.7 per cent, totalling 889,319 when compared to the corresponding period in 2009. Concurrently, the number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went up by 5.3 per cent, totalling 255,996. The highest number of commuters was recorded in October (343,054 or 38.6 per cent of the total for the quarter).

The number of trips in the period under review stood at 4,716, a marginal increase of 0.1 per cent over the corresponding period of the previous year. The majority of trips took place in October – 1,624 – or 34.4 per cent of total trips for this quarter.

On an annual basis, 2010 saw growths in commuters, trips and vehicles carried between Malta and Gozo. Overall, the number of trips went up by 81 or 0.4 per cent over 2009. The number of commuters registered an increase of 239,439 or 6.3 per cent over the previous year and the total number of vehicles carried between Malta and Gozo in 2010 advanced by 35,039 or 3.3 per cent.

August was the month in which the highest number of trips was recorded – 2,066 or 10.3 per cent of total trips. This month also saw the highest number of vehicles and commuters carried between the two islands – 125,377 and 500,237 respectively.
