Work on the ‘Zewwieqa Waterfront’ got underway last week, turning the area known as Taz-Zewwieqa into a waterfront area by creating pedestrian zones, landscaped plazas with seating areas and open sea views, an area hosting the restored Dghajsa tal-Latini and an informal stage structure. The project aims to create another tourism zone in Gozo by turning it into a hub of entertainment activities.
Two bidders have been recommended to complete the works required to embellish the Zewwieqa Waterfront at Mgarr harbour, with Road Network Joint Venture, recommended to complete the vast majority of the work required. A competition for the design of the waterfront, beside the marina, was originally launched in 2007. The design chosen was that of Architect Godwin Sultana of Ghajnsielem.
In 2010, S&A Quality Assurance Surveyor, was awarded the contract for the project’s construction management services, with a €119,550.70 bid. Just over €5 million, excluding VAT, was budgeted for the project, with 85 per cent of the necessary funds provided through the EU’s European Regional Development Fund. The project was divided into 3 lots. Lot 1 comprises the bulk of the project – the civil and embellishment works – and allocated a €4.8 million budget. Lot 2 comprises the installation of service utilities and Lot 3 the supply and installation of street furniture. Three bidders submitted bids for all 3 lots: Polidano Brothers Ltd, GRV Joint Venture and Road Network Joint Works. A fourth bidder, Bugeja Bros (Gozo) Ltd, only submitted a bid for the third lot. Polidano were excluded before the financial offers were made public.
The cheapest bid for Lot 1 was filed by Road Network Joint Venture, whose €3.76 million offer narrowly outbid GRV Joint Venture’s €3.85 million one. By offering to supply and install street furniture for €35,872, it also filed the cheapest bid for Lot 3. However, while it offered to carry out the works outlined in Lot 2 for €97,457.75, Gatt Tarmac Ltd, on behalf of GRV, offered to carry them out for just €65,914.46. Since, according to the tender document, the contract should be awarded to the cheapest-priced bid satisfying technical requirements, Road Network Joint Venture has been recommended for lots 1 and 3, while Gatt Tarmac has been recommended for the second lot.

I sincerely ask ,where are all of us gozitans who leave the car at mgarr to travel by the ferry, going to park it now as gozo channel employees have now been given privilege over us in the parking. The project doesn’t look as if there are going to be any parking places anywhere at Zewwieqa.
Privilages? You must be joking. It’s a complete hijack! Gozo Channel “reserved” something between 25-30% of the available spaces down at the terminal carpark. What irkes me most is that wardens are doing the rounds there too, even though it’s supposed to be private property.
God, we need competition! 🙁

and the Gozo and Maltese People can pay all the money for the tunnel, you are dreaming. Than you want a tunnel between Italy and Malta and a tunnel between Malta and Tunesia.

Can the minister for Gozo or somebody at the ministry tell us if the car park at Mgarr is privately owned or public? If it is public then how come Gozo channel reserved more than 30 parking spaces? If it is private how come the wardens roam it several times daily? There is also a notice that states that this parking is reserved for daily commuters using the ferry! Every commuter sees for himself the large amount of K-plate hire vehicles left there every evening sometimes occupying a space for weeks on end. Thanks for the reply!!
Agree with R Borg. Can someone from the Ministry of Gozo or Permanent Secretary advise us all if the Mgarr Terminal car Park is Private Property?? Can also they advise us how is it possible that 30% of car park is taken by Gozo Channel Employees and another 25% of same carpark taken by a certain car hire company all year round??
We common people who have to travel everyday to Malta would appreciate if someone from the Gozo Ministry respond since we have to leave the cars at Mgarr and dont have the luxury of going to work with a private car subsidised by our taxes as Ministry employees do. Thanks for the reply!

its taken over 18 months to resurface the zlendi road, what chance have they of completing a tunnel in the same amount of time 🙂
