The Gozo Carnival 2011

Nadur launched its carnival activities on February 26 with a Mr King/Ms Queen Carnival competition held at the MBC Theatre.

Nadur council organised a carnival parade at St Peter and St Paul Square on Sunday, February 27. The show featured people wearing animal costumes, children in colourful costumes, masked revellers, dancing, and floats.

The parade ended with the traditional kukkanja, as well as a new smaller kukkanja, organised especially for primary school children. The crowd also enjoyed a traditional spontaneous carnival sketch with masked participants. Each participant received a carnival memento presented by Nadur mayor Miriam Portelli. Among the spectators was Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said, who is the former mayor of Nadur.

Carnival celebrations opened in Victoria on Friday March 4 with a children’s defile followed by a dance spectacle on Independence Square with the participation of schools.

The Victoria Carnival Festival was Held on Saturday 5, at Independence Square, Victoria, with the participation of bands and DJs, carnival floats and dance companies.

A defile along Republic Street, Victoria, with all participating groups, was held on Sunday March 6, followed by a spectacle by dance companies, floats and grotesques masks on Independence Square, Victoria.

A grand finale show was held on Independence Square on March 8.

Carnival was also held in the villages of Xaghra, Kercem, Xewkija, Gharb and Qala.
