Xaghral Council celebrates anniversary of parish foundation

The Xaghra Local Council will be organising various activities to commemorate the 323rd Anniversary of the Xaghra Parish Foundation. The date of this anniversary is Thursday, the 28th of April 2011. The parish was established through the decree Cum in Prima signed by Bishop Davide Cocco Palmeri. The church which served as the first parish church of Xaghra was the chapel of Saint Anthony the Abbot.

The full programme of activities will be held between Wednesday, the 27th and Saturday, the 30th of April 2011 as follows:

Wednesday 27th April: A Day dedicated to the Xaghra elderly.

Between 9.00am and 2.00pm, the Council organises a cultural outing to Malta for the Xaghra elderly who attend at the Day Care Centre. This outing includes a visit to the traditional feast of Saint Gregory the Great celebrated annually in Zejtun on the first Wednesday after Easter.

Thursday 28th April: Commemoration of the 323rd Anniversary of the Xaghra Parish foundation.

9.30am: A fire drill show by the Civil Protection Department at the Xaghra Primary School.

7.00pm: Solemn Mass of thanksgiving at the Collegiate Basilica and Sanctuary of the Nativity of Our Lady led by Mgr Carmelo Refalo, Xaghra Archpriest. Former mayors and councilors of the Xaghra Local Council are the special guests for this religious celebration.

7.45pm: At the ‘Dun Alwig Camilleri’ Hall in the Victory Philharmonic Society’s club, there will be the inauguration of a photo exhibition about the history of sports in Xaghra. Afterwards, a reception for the members of the various organisations found in Xaghra will be held at the club’s foyer.

Friday 29th April: A Day dedicated to Xaghra children and youths.

Between 9.00am and 2.00pm, the Xaghra Local Council holds the annual Library Day at the ‘Patri Gigi Camilleri SJ’ public library.

From 8.30pm onwards: A musical concert with the participation of various local bands and DJs in Archpriest Guzepp Diacono street.

Saturday 30th April: XAGHRA DAY.

Between 10am and noon, there will be educational visits to the various historical places of interest found in Xaghra.

Between 2pm and 5pm, there will be a football tournament (for the under 10s) in the Xaghra football ground in 8th September Avenue.

8.00pm: A main programme commemorating XAGHRA DAY including reading of literature about Xaghra, commemorative speech and the award of the honour ‘GIEH IX-XAGHRA.’ The Victory Band of Xaghra participates. The programme ends at around 10pm with the singing of the Maltese national anthem.
