First Puttinu Cares Gozo Sports Weekend being held in May

For the first time in Gozo, the Puttinu Cares Gozo Committee is organising the Puttinu Cares Gozo Sports Weekend, a large-scale activity in several localities in Gozo in aid of Puttinu Cares, the organisation which helps children and people who are suffering from cancer.

The activities will kick off on Sunday 1st May and will reach their climax during the weekend between the 6th and 8th May 2011, during the same weekend that the 7th edition of the Puttinu Cares Football Marathon will be held at the Marsa Sports Ground.

The official opening of this weekend will be on Friday 6th May at 5.30 p.m. The ceremony will start with a mass for all Gozitan youths and sports people at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu, in the presence of several distinct personalities, children from all schools in Gozo as well as Thomas Cremona, the Maltese youngster who when younger fought cancer and who recently reached the Atlantic. Thomas will share his experiences with the audience present for this occassion.

Activities on Saturday 7th May will start at 8a..m. at the Gozo Stadium in Xewkija with 6-a-side football matches for everyone. Football will come to an end at 8 p.m. At the same ground, children can enjoy themselves on the bouncing castle as well as face painting.

Meanwhile,

Bocci competitions will be held in Ta’ Sannat, Xewkija, Qala and Qbajjar between 3p.m. and 6 p.m.

At the Munxar Square a car show will be held between 2 p.m. and midnight,

At the Salus Well Being Salon at the Duke Shopping Complex in Victoria will provide hairdressing services between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. This salon will also be open on Sunday 8th May between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Activities on Saturday will come to an end with the PUTTINU RETRO DISCO PARTY with DJ ALEX (REFLEX) GRECH at the KU CLUB in Victoria Gozo, playing 80s, 90s and more. Doors open at 9.p.m. with warm-up by local DJs. Tickets cost EUR 5 and can be bought from the entrance.

The activities will continue on Sunday 8th May with:

the Gozo Half Marathon and bicycle race in Xaghra and 7 other villages in Gozo between 8.30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Football for everyone at the Gozo Stadium between 8 a.m. and noon and at the Sannat football ground between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Horse show at the Xewkija square between 9 a.m. and noon

Sparatura fuq il-Plattini at the Zebbug Shooting Range from 9 a.m. onwards

Bocci competitions at Sannat, Xewkija and Qala between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The closing ceremony will be held at the Sannat football ground between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. with a show by Gozitan artists including Morena and Cash & Band. There will also be face painting, bouncing castle and Disney characters for children, football, and Giochi Senza Frontieri.

Moreover, the Eco-Gozo teachers who during the year organise several extra-curricular activities within the Gozo College, will be organising the Aerial Runway – Flying Fox – an attraction to youths.

Despite this jam-packed weekend, there are other activities which will be held for the same noble cause:

29th/30th April 2011: The Aurora Band Club will be organising snooker competitions from Friday at 5. p.m. till Saturday at 9 p.m.

1st May 2011: A walk for Puttinu, starting from the Gozo General Hospital at 3.30 p.m.

1st May 2011: Horse racing at the Xewkija Horse track at 1.30 p.m.

3rd May 2011: HIGH TEA for PUTTINU AT 7 p.m. at the City Pearl in Gozo.

15th May 2011: Fishing competition in aid of Puttinu Cares at 7 a.m. at Qbajjar, limits of Zebbug
