The Parliamentary Secretariat for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Consultation in collaboration with the Gozo Business Chamber organised a public meeting to discuss the possibility of a permanent link by subsea tunnel between Malta and Gozo.
The meeting was addressed by Professor Eivind Grov, a Norwegian scientist and engineer, who has given advice and worked on a number of subsea tunnels in several countries including Norway, the Faroe Islands and the Shetland Islands.
The Professor talked about underwater tunnel construction and discussed the project of a tunnel between Malta and Gozo. The speakers said that the project would reduce the journey time between the two islands, as well as attract more investment and create more jobs in Gozo.
The EU Agency Jaspers, which is a partnership between the Commission (DG Regional Policy), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and KfW which became operational in 2006 and offers technical assistance to the twelve Member States that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007 to prepare major projects for EU supports, had prepared information towards the preliminary study on the viability of the project. The preliminary study should begin in July and be completed by October. The study will act as an aid to the Maltese Government in deciding the viability of continuing with the project.

” the project would reduce the journey time between the two islands, as well as attract more investment and create more jobs in Gozo.”
And how many you will destroy ? It`s a whole company included kiosk owners and all mini bus companys – and much more .
Great idea !
What we want to see is – both sides of the tunnel !

Gozo
A tunnel will destroy the tranquility of such a beautiful island. There will be cars coming and going which will destroy what Gozo is really about. Tourists will find another place to visit which will ruin locally run business. Think of the big picture and the future of your beautiful Island for the sake of future generations.
(Melbourne, Australia)
The Florida Keys are a set of islands linked by a causeway with two lanes on either side. Some islands are distanced as much apart as seven miles. It should be possible to have a similar causeway between Gozo and Comino and onto Cirkewwa/Marfa. It could be done as a single span bridge and be complete in under three years. The causeway between Gozo and Comino can open up to allow ferries/sailing ships through and for those who may want to travel by ferry between Gozo and Sa Maison or Ferries. It could be environmentally friendly. It would be a boost to tourism to Gozo, do away with the closure of hotels in winter. You could still keep a Heliport open at Xewkija for hospital emergencies to Mater Dei Hospital. Gozitans can travel daily to work to Malta in under half an hour to Valletta instead of an hour. It would be one third the cost of a tunnel and do away with the dangers of submerged tunnels.
I think a bridge between Malta to Comino and Comino to Gozo would cost less and easy to maintain
Why are you doing your best to destroy the beautiful island of Gozo with your madcap schemes? LEAVE IT ALONE! A tunnel or a bridge is not needed, tourists want the charm and tranquility of Gozo to stay and so do the local people. You only have to campare the two islands to see the huge difference between the way Gozo people look after their island and the Maltese have no respect for theirs. Money, money, money that’s all that this is about, i say again – LEAVE THINGS AS THEY ARE, THE FERRY BOATS ARE FINE, THEY ADD CHARM TO THE JOURNEY!!
