The stories covered in this weeks issue are:
1. Dr John Galea’s Missa Fons Vitae was performed for the first time by the Chorus Urbanus, during Mass led by H.E. Mgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo, on the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Fontana.
The piece, which was commissioned by parish priest Joseph Bajada to commemorate the first centenary of the Fontana parish church, receives its name from Calì’s altarpiece where Christ is seen standing on a fount of water with the inscription Fons Vitae.
The music receives its partially modal countenance from Gregorian chant.
2. In a moving ceremony at the Cathedral of the Assumption on Thursday June 23, Bishop Mario Grech of Gozo, ordained two young men as deacons: Daniel Grech of Kercem and Mark Bonello of Xaghra. A deacon is a minister or servant, for the deacon has a three-fold role of service: Charity in which he is of service to the community; Word in which he proclaims the Gospel and preaches; and Liturgy in which he assists at Mass.
Relatives and friends of the two deacons filled the Cathedral to capacity to assist the ceremony. Grech and Bonello promised loyalty to the bishop, who in turn laid his hands upon them and handed them the Gospel with these very inspiring words: “Receive the gospel of Christ, whose herald you are. Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach.”
