VersAghtini IKM will be participating in the ‘Zejt iz-Zejtun’ annual event, to be held in Zejtun on the last weekend in September.

The VersAghtini programme to be held on Saturday, the 24th of September, will include traditional music, a selection of Maltese literature to commemorate the late Profs Guze Aquilina, and live anecdotes and experiences spoken in various dialects.The evening will get underway at 7:00pm and everyone is warmly invited to attend.

VersAghtini IKM started in 2004, when Miriam Cassar was asked by the then curator of the Inquisitor’s Palace, Mr. K. Gambin, to organise a literary activity at the Auberge de France in Vittoriosa, as a first activity to mark this Auberge’s use as the Maltese Language Museum. This proved to be a success and many others followed. In 2008, the group was registered as an NGO.

The concept behind these events has always been the appreciation in public of the the three branches of the Maltese language. These include our Maltese Literature, traditional Maltese music and the island’s dialects.

Miriam said that the most challenging aspect about the group is finding brave enough people to speak in their own dialect in public. It presently has more than 12 people who speak in different dialects and they hail from Birkirkara, Hal Gharghur, Hal Ghaxaq, Qrendi, Mqabba, Zurrieq, Zejtun, Mosta, Marsaxlokk, Birgu and from Nadur.

The group are always on the lookout for further members, especially from others towns, who would like to be included.
