All schools in Gozo will be benefiting from a maximum of €3,000 each for projects in their respective schools, linked to the action plan for eco-Gozo from 2010 to 2012. This scheme will encompass Government primary and secondary schools, post-secondary schools as well as special needs and church schools.

Details of the scheme were announced by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono at an event held at the St Theresa School, Kercem, where the Minister for Gozo presented a set of books for the school library, which had been funded through the eco-Gozo scheme, to the Head of School. The books include topics such as sustainable development, environment, nature, healthy living, local food and local legends. The package also includes a DVD documentary ‘Carbon Footprints.’ The package will be given to all schools in Gozo, as well as reference and public libraries, in total around 700 books are to be distributed.

The Minister for Gozo said that “as well as increasing the choice of books in school libraries, the main purpose of this initiative is to enable Gozitan students to increase their general knowledge and learn about the culture and traditions of Gozo.” She added that “through reading these books, students will have more opportunity to appreciate all that the island offers them and what they have inherited from generation to generation until the present day.”

“An eco-Gozo scheme for schools is to be launched in the coming weeks,” the Minister said, “by which all schools around Gozo will continue to see improvements for the benefit of their students. This scheme will be launched following a meeting with eco-school student representatives in Gozo, where they proposed various projects to be implemented in their schools.”
