Heritage Malta, in collaboration with the Luqa Local Council and St. Thomas More Girl’s Secondary School of Santa Lucija, assisted in the preparation of a workshop, part of a European Union funded project entitled ‘Youths meet the Cultural Heritage.’ During this event spread over two days, the Luqa local Council hosted in Malta a delegation of students from the municipalities of Dionysos (Greece) and another one from Fiumicino (Italy).
An important element of this project was the organisation of a workshop within the prehistoric sites of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. Students from the Maltese school guided the foreign delegation around the archaeological park while explaining the different archaeological features found within these temples. Employees of Heritage Malta were also present on site during this event in order to assist students during their visit. Access to the Hagar Qim Archaeological Park, as well as the material utilised during the workshop, were sponsored by Heritage Malta, while the Luqa local council published material that was used during the workshop.
In order to prepare for this event, students from the St. Thomas More secondary school visited the Hagar Qim Archaeological Park several times prior to the arrival of the foreign delegation. School teachers, as well as Heritage Malta employees, provided the necessary information so that the students would be prepared on the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples workshop.
This project will also included a visit by the local delegation to Italy. During this visit, the group from Fiumicino will explain to other participants the other projects in Portus (port Ruman), as well as in Greece (Dionysos). The final conference of this project will be taking place in Fiumicino, the coordinating municipality. The municipalities of Hal Luqa and Fiumicino, twin towns since 2007, have already cooperated in several projects together.
Heritage Malta takes part in such initiatives in order to increase awareness about the Maltese historical and cultural heritage. One important aspect of Heritage Malta is the education element which is essential for the long-term sustainability of the Maltese heritage.
