On the occasion of Lent and Holy Week celebrations, the Xaghra Parish will be organising an interesting exhibition of Crucifixes with special significance.

This exhibition will inaugurate a unique year commemorating the first centenary of the arrival from Lecce of the devout Crucifix which today forms part of the main statue which is carried in procession on Good Friday in the same town.

It was in 1913 that this devout Crucifix arrived in Xaghra. The Xaghra parishioners were so impressed by the beauty of this Crucifix that, in a short period of time, the Parish ordered a full set of eight statues representing the Passion of Our Lord made by the same firm – Luigi Guacci.

The exhibition has been named ‘AVE CRUX’ (Hail to you O Cross) and in the exhibition, one can see a large number of Crucifixes with great historical value. This is because the exhibited Crucifixes either belonged to important persons (like Frenc tal-Gharb, Dun Mikiel Attard and Bishop Nicholas Cauchi) or they are kept in monasteries and various religious communities in our islands.

Other exhibited crucifixes which will make this exhibition a unique one are those rich in antiquity and artistic value. For the majority of them, this is the first time that they have actually left the place in which they are normally kept.

This exhibition will be held at the Domus Curialis (Xaghra Parish Office) in Victory Square, Xaghra between Saturday the 31st of March and Saturday the 7th of April 2012.

Opening hours are from 10.00am till 12.00pm and from 6.00pm till 8.00pm on normal working days.

Maundy Thursday from 8.00pm till 11.00pm.

Good Friday: from 9.00am till 12.00pm and from 6.00pm till 9.00pm.
