Grupp Universitarji Ghawdxin’ (GUG) has said that it condemns what it described as discriminatory comments made by KSU Education Coordinator Luke Buttigieg as a response to the motion presented by the Pulse organisation suggesting the creation of a KSU liasion officer responsible for Gozitan affairs.

GUG said it believes that Mr Buttigieg’s comments went against the KSU Code of Ethics (Part A; Articles 2.2 & 10.3) and that as a matter of fact the comments were later on removed from his profile on Facebook. The Group said that lthough Gozitan students face a number of similar problems which are normally encountered by foreign students, it is totally unfair to consider the Gozitan student population as one of the many different ethnic minorities on campus.

The Gozo University Group said that it highlights the importance of the discussion on the matter, as one would expect to happen in a democratic society. The Group said that it would have been much better had KSU’s Education Coordinator spoke about his actions when GUG was raising important issues affecting the lives of hundreds of Gozitan students. GUG added that many of these issues are still pending and it would be interesting to know what KSU doing to help Gozitan students.

GUG said it represents 10% of the student population – students who face different challenges than other students. Having a special post representing Gozitan students is nothing new in politics or civil society. In fact the same principle is also enforced on a national basis with the well known example of a Ministry for Gozo.
