The Malta Environment and Planning Authority has this afternoon responded to the statment issued by Birdlife Malta yesterday regarding the initiation of an independent scientific study on bird migration to coincide with the Spring migratory season in April and May.

“The 2012 study is intended as a continuation of an independent bird migration study commissioned by the Authority in Spring 2011 and for this reason it is based on the same methodology. The study has been under discussion since last year, including at the Ornis Committee, where BirdLife (Malta) is a member,” MEPA said.

MEPA continued to say that “the study, which will be conducted by a team of scientific experts and independent ornithologists, aims to gather ornithological data that will enable a scientific assessment of the influx of two migratory birds (turtle dove and quail) in Malta during the Spring migratory period.”

“Birdlife Malta have been invited to participate and the Authority would greatly welcome their contribution to the study to ensure that the best possible results can be achieved,” MEPA concluded.
