The Ministry for Gozo announced today that Gozitan students in Malta are to be given additional assistance which will eliminate the distinction between university and other students, now all Gozitan students studying at University, MCAST or ITS will benefit.
“Every student will now be eligible for €400 every three months of the academic year, equating to an increase of €1,200, which is separate from the normal stipend. The first installment being paid under the new scheme is covering the period January-March 2012,” the Ministry said.
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono said that the “Ministry recognises the burden of the costs incurred by parents of students studying in Malta. This incentive will also be an encouragement for more young people to continue their studies in Malta.”
The process of application for students has now also been facilitated. The application form, is to be filled in at the beginning of each scholastic year and is accessible on the Ministry for Gozo Website, www.gozo.gov.mt. It will no longer be necessary for students to present their ferry ticket, as it had been in the past.
“Current figures show that there are 1035 Gozitan students pursuing courses at the University of Malta, double those who attended 10 years ago. There are also 181 students who attend MCAST centres in Malta, up from 5 in 2001,” the Minister concluded.
