In a reply to the statement from the Gozo Business Chamber this morning regarding road diversions in Mellieha, the Mellieha Local Council said that “whilst it understands that this may cause inconvenience to Gozitans, everyone had to bear a portion of the weight and make some sacrifices with this project.”
“The Mellieha residents are having to experience all the vehicles coming from Gozo, Ghadira or Armier, passing through the centre of the village since the bypass closed,” the Council said.
“This alternative arrangement had been agreed within the council and then between the police and Transport Malta. Since the project started in January, some drivers had failed to obey road diversion signs to the Popeye Village causing inconvenience to residential areas, with severe traffic congestion.”
The council continued by saying that it “was prepared to meet with the GBC, providing that the residents of Mellieha were not asked to make more sacrifices than the had already done.”
The Mellieha Council called on the authorities to ensure the contractor keeps to the project time frames, to enable at least one of the lanes of the bypass could be opened, to alleviate problems.

Using the same argument of the Mellieha Local Council, can someone tell me what the reactions would be were the Ghansielem, Xewkija and Rabat (Gozo) Local Councils to take the same decision and close “their” streets to traffic from other places? I’m sure the people of these localities are making sacrifices.
