Last Saturday the Aurora Theatre experienced a euphoria of song and dance with the musical Mama Mia. The theatre said that this “joint venture between the Leone Philharmonic Society and Pieds Dansants, the dance group headed by Michelle Vella, Mamma Mia Dance Show took many by surprise and managed to create an aura of sheer fun, worry-free and typically Greek-Mediterranean joie de vivre, attracting a very large audience.”
“The audience got to their feet, many of them in the central aisle dancing to the immortal hits of Mamma Mia and Waterloo,” the theatre said.
Those watching were taken on a roller coaster of emotions, as the two sub-plots of Sophie and her mother unfolded in parallel. On one hand, the audience sympathised with Sophie, the 20-year old girl who wants to marry her fiancé, ably interpreted by Annabelle Zammit as she insists on her quest to find her real father.
Donna and her Dynamo friends, three women still in their prime, reminised about their youth, now that they were in their golden years, thanks to splendid and explosive renditions by Marlene Galea, Jane Muscat and Abi Macleod Clark who took the stage in their stride and shook the house.
They were complemented by their co-stars Paul Camilleri, Colin Clark and Fabian Galea in the roles of Harry, Bill and Sam, who, together with Christian Saliba in the role of Sky, completed the main cast. The rest of the cast was made up of scores of volunteers, ranging from children to youths, and veterans. Michelle Vella and Marlon Mercieca managed the rest of the team, which included acting coaches, set design, construction, logistics personnel, technical crew, choreographers, and seamstresses amongt others.
Those who have missed Mamma Mia, or those who enjoyed themselves so much that they’re willing to re-live it all, excerpts from the show are scheduled for the 19th of May in the evening at the Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria as part of the Lejlet Lapsi Notte Gozitana events.
