The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) expressed its concern in a statement this morning saying that the “Gozo General Hospital is unsafe.”
The union said that, “while the government boasts spending €1 million daily on Mater Dei Hospital, the Gozo General Hospital (GGH) has no funds to pay nurses to maintain safe care practice and proper standards of care.”
“Nurses are doing their best but are unfortunately becoming stressed and frustrated due to the shortage of nursing staff,”
MUMN said that the more than 17 vacant nursing posts, combined with overtime restrictions for nurses is adding to the problem.
“While the Maltese Government treats Maltese patients with a state of the art hospital, GGH is a rat-infested hospital, with no air exchanges in operation theatres and no proper funding to provide adequate staffing levels,” MUMN claimed.
The statement continued by saying that, “the Government is investing money on the building of a new oncology service in Malta, rather than providing the service of chemotherapy administration in Gozo, with Gozitan patients are considered second class citizens.”
MUMN claimed that it also had to intervene and solve the problem when the hospital’s air conditioning system broke down.
The Union said that “if no proper staffing levels are provided by the 13th of July, we will have to consider other alternatives to safeguard the patient safety.”
MUMN concluded with an appeal to the public “to avoid the Gozo Hospital and use Mater Dei, since the priorities of the Maltese government are on it and not the Gozo General Hospital.”

This is indeed another example if such were needed of just how much this Government cares about its own people specifically the people of Gozo. Theatres that would not look out of place in a third world slum, ceilings with lumps falling off them, floors with holes which were perhaps put there purposely to act as traps for the rats that run through the place at night. In any other civilised country a hospital such as this would have been condemned years ago but not in Malta.
For God’s sake people stand up for your rights. Are your lives not worth as much as the lives of those on Malta? Do you think it’s right that you, your parents and your children are treated in such a disease infested dump?
GonziPN don’t give a damn about you and are quite happy to spend about 100 million Euros on a new Wendy house at the entrance to Valletta which was never needed in the first place. Just think what 100 million Euros could have achieved if they had spent it on hospital facilities on Gozo.
Vote for GonziPN in the upcoming elections if you want another five years of being treated like dogs.
My God what am I reading !!!!! Is this true ???
These are very poor comments from the MUMN; in fact these were never the complaints expected from a union which is supposed to be neutral. The suggestion that we Gozitans have to “avoid Gozo General Hospital” are misleading the Gozitan public because if citizens in Gozo have an emergency, they have to get straight to the Gozo General Hospital and not call Mater Dei Hospital for a medical transfer. The services at the GGH remain efficient even though the hospital may have administrative problems. So I suggest the MUMN to GET LOST !!! Gozitans know how to address their problems. Compliments to the hospital workers who keep on working against all odds when their collegues who are supposed to be on shift with them in the ward are not there ….
Mr Tyrell, please.. why don’t you go back to your country of origin ? Please note that the health services in this country have been going backward since the expulsion of the Knights from Malta, the Sacra Infermeria was taken over by the French Republic, all Maltese patients were dumped out in the streets or conveyed to the churches and the health services were all for the French soldiers. With the coming of the British to Malta we can’t say that the Gozo hospital was a centre of excellence, in fact things remained at a standstill. And this was accepted by all locals as the British were here on the invitation of the Maltese. The Knights hospital in Gozo kept functioning even though it became outdated. Anyway, I hope that Mr Tyrell does not end up in the street as happened to the poor Maltese patients on the arrival of the French in Malta. Unless he goes back to his country of origin. And for his info, we got some 3 state of the art ambulances in which we can transfer him back to the airport. And mind you these were not funded by the British Government or the EU, but by the taxes of the local people. God Bless All Gozitans.
@C Galea. So you think that the conditions being reported by the nurses are acceptable? Perhaps you think that is all the Gozitan people deserve. I happen to think that they deserve at least the same treatment and facilities as their counterparts in Malta. Take the blue glasses off for a minute and stand up for the Gozitan people rather than a Government that doesn’t give a damn.
Possibli dan li qed naqra meta Dr.Gonzi kien jghidilna li kollox miexi fuq ir-rubini ! kollox state of the Art. Fejn kienet Giovanna Debono ???
