Alternattiva Demokratika -The Green Party referred in a statement today to the report issued earlier this week by the European Commission on Waste Management.

AD said that it “notes that once more that Malta’s performance has been classified with countries which have an implementation deficit in practically all areas of waste management. It is only Greece and Bulgaria who have received a worse classification.”

Carmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairperson and Spokesperson on Sustainable Development and Home Affairs for AD, stated that “during the past eight years political responsibility for waste management policy was shouldered by Minister George Pullicino who instead of seeking ways to implement EU policy on waste was more interested in political confrontation on issues such as that at the Waste Recycling Plant at Sant’Antnin in Marsaskala.

“Whilst it is correct to state that this report is a reflection of the situation as it was two years ago, Malta’s position is a serious one just the same as it indicates a lack of will to implement adequately waste management policy. The report shows very clearly a very serious failure.”

“In view of this declaration of failure,” added Cacopardo, “Minister Pullicino should assume political responsibility and resign thereby creating an opportunity for someone else who can take charge and contribute positively to an adequate implementation of waste management policy.”
