The Church of All Souls (Tal-Erwieh), Valletta: An Art Historical Appreciation by Mariestelle Spiteri, MA History of Art, candidate, organised by the Malta Historical Society.

The establishment of the Church of All Souls (Tal-Erwieh) in Valletta is directly linked to the Rhodiot Community who settled in Malta with the arrival of the Knights Hospitallers from the Island of Rhodes in 1530.

The church, originally dedicated to S. Nicola di Bari, was the first Greek parish church to be constructed in Valletta, exclusively under the domain of the Greek Papàs. During the early seventeenth century, the Church of S Nicola was ceded to the Sodalita` delle Anime Purganti who replaced the existing church with a new edifice dedicated to The Souls in Purgatory.

This lecture will attempt to provide a documented account on these events and highlight some interesting new discoveries related to its artistic importance.

Mariestelle Spiteri Graduated B.A. (Hons) History of Art and is currently reading for her M.A. in the History of Art department at the University of Malta.

Her area of specialisation is the study of artistic patronage within the religious confraternities in Valletta (Malta), mainly focusing on the large number of Confraternities that grouped themselves together in the Collegiate Parish Church of St Paul Shipwreck in Valletta.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, the 16th of October, starting at 6.00pm, at the Alliance Française, Casa Sir Luigi Preziosi, 108 St Thomas Street, Floriana.
